Prep roundup: SRV girls basketball team breezes past Foothill, inches closer to 50 consecutive league victories

GIRLS BASKETBALL

DANVILLE – A youthful San Ramon Valley squad ran its winning streak in East Bay Athletic League competition to 48 in a row with a 73-25 victory over visiting Foothill on Friday night. 

It is a run that started in 2020 and – barring a monumental upset by Dublin or rival Monte Vista next week, will reach an even 50 by the end of the regular season. 

It was a pair of sophomores – Hania Bowes and Ella Gunderson – who led the way for SRV (20-3, 7-0). Bowes, the sister of current Cal-Berkeley hooper Sofia, scored 16 points on a steady diet of drives to the rim. 

Slashing guard Ella Gunderson poured in a team-high 22 points on a variety of nifty layups and a couple of threes for a team ranked No. 4 in the latest Bay Area News Group rankings. 

Alyssa Rudd, a transfer from crosstown rival Monte Vista, scored 10 points while also showing her versatility as a passer, rebounder and defender. 

“She is a tough out, because her three-point shot is looking really good, and if you want to double-team her inside, watch her make the right pass,” SRV coach John Cristiano said of Rudd. “And she’s so much fun to be around. She’s very coachable, and works her butt off.”

In total, nine SRV players got on the scoresheet in a game that was never close. 

Sophie Nguyen led Foothill (5-17, 0-7) with 12 points and made a pair of impressive off-the-dribble triples. 

Up next for SRV and Cristiano is a Tuesday game at Dublin, and then a Wednesday matchup at home against St. Mary’s-Stockton, which defeated the Wolves in the NorCal Open playoffs last season.  – Joseph Dycus

No. 3 Pinewood 57, No. 7 Priory 50

Pinewood took down the Priory on Friday night at home. Valerie Kuelker led all scorers with 25 points for Pinewood (14-3, 6-0 WBAL). Jolyn Ding chipped in 17, and Caitlyn Kramer added 10. Natalie Neumann led the Priory (15-4, 4-2 WBAL) with 13 points, and Nani Tuigamala scored 11. – Christian Babcock

No. 15 Salesian 68, St. Mary’s-Berkeley 50

Vanessa Parilla torched the nets in Salesian’s victory over St. Mary’s-Berkeley in Tri-County Athletic Leauge play. Parilla made five 3-pointers and scored a game-high 19 points to pace The Pride. The Sawyer sisters – Janiya and Jamia – combined for 28 points in Salesian’s second consecutive victory. Tatiana Wilson led St. Mary’s (14-12, 5-3) with 12 points and Neiyah Thompson scored 10 for the Panthers. – Joseph Dycus

No. 16 California 66, Dougherty Valley 40

California point guard Lauren Yee was dominant in California’s rivalry game against Dougherty Valley. Yee scored 14 points, dished out seven assists and had seven steals as the Grizzlies blew out Dougherty Valley on the road. Sofie Addiego and Trinity Chu also had 14 points for California, which improved to 15-8, 6-1. Dougherty Valley’s Keira Tom knocked down five 3-pointers and finished with 19 points. No. 19 Menlo School 45, Notre Dame-Belmont 33

Menlo (13-6, 2-4 WBAL) avenged a previous loss to NDB in league play with a double-digit win on the road. When the two teams played in Atherton, Notre Dame (13-5, 2-4) won 52-42. Senior Karen Xin led the Knights with 23 points, and sophomore Ava Allen added 13. – Christian Babcock

American 59, James Logan 48

Shirina Shi turned in another high-scoring performance, scoring 33 points in American’s win over James Logan. Iwalani Lealao had a team-high 20 points for Logan, which dropped to 11-9, 5-5. American (17-4, 7-3) won its last five games and is now in third place in the Mission Valley Athletic League. – Nathan Canilao

Harker 53, Castilleja 35

Harker took care of visiting Castilleja at home to improve to 16-3 and 5-1 in the West Bay Athletic League’s Skyline Division. Isabella Lo led Harker with 26 points, supplemented by Jillian Chen’s 10. Castilleja (14-3, 4-2) was led by Antonia Vlahos’ 14 points. – Christian Babcock

Lynbrook 44, Los Altos 38

Lynbrook beat Los Altos by six at home to keep pace in a crowded SCVAL De Anza race. The Vikings (15-5, 7-1) trail only undefeated Los Gatos. Senior guard Alice Wu scored 14 points to lead Lynbrook, and senior point guard Alris Chen added eight while orchestrating the offense. Junior Ella McFarlane led Los Altos (6-14, 3-5) with 14 points, followed by senior Abigail Santos with eight. – Christian Babcock

Mills 69, Aragon 31

Mills more than doubled up visiting Aragon in a PAL Bay matchup. Mills (12-9, 6-3 PAL) actually trailed 10-9 after the opening quarter, but a 23-2 burst in the second quarter gave the Vikings control of the contest the rest of the way. Sofia Kwan led Mills with 19 points, followed by Layla Wong and Luna Mengel-Yoshimura with eight apiece. Jaclyn Ruttenberg paced Aragon (7-14, 2-7) with 10 points, and Daisy Pantoja Beltran added eight. – Christian Babcock

No. 10 Liberty 74, Freedom 65

Liberty cruised to its 35th straight Bay Valley Athletic League win behind 20 points from senior Andrew Vixon. Junior Dante Vigil scored 15 points and sophomore point guard Jaiden Miller had 14. Freedom (9-14, 4-4) has been playing better as of late and got 18 points, three assists and three steals from junior Ryder Carper. Liberty moved to 22-2, 8-0. – Nathan Canilao

Alameda 73, Berkeley 30

Alameda earned its second straight win by 35 points or more, blowing out Berkeley at home. Senior forward Zion Moore totaled 15 points and Sage Kopelman had 12. The Hornets are undefeated in West Alameda County Conference Foothill Division play and improved to 15-6, 6-0. – Nathan Canilao

Fremont-Oakland 81, McClymonds 57

Fremont bounced back after its tough loss to Oakland Tech on Wednesday by beating McClymonds on the road. Dominic Antoine Jr. led the Tigers with 19 points, followed by Roy Bishop Jr. who had 14. Zaire Albert added 12 points and Deyonte Spears had 10 for Fremont, which is now 15-10, 4-3 Oakland Athletic League. Senior Rashawn Richard totaled 17 points, Brandon Davis scored 16 and William Tidwell had 11 for the Warriors. McClymonds dropped to 9-14, 2-5. – Nathan Canilao

Sacred Heart Prep 65, Priory 63

The Gators edged the Priory by two on the road after making up a four-point deficit in the fourth quarter. SHP (11-6, 5-1 WBAL) trailed 50-46 entering the fourth but closed the game out strong with a 19-13 final frame to pick up the win. Alex Osterloh led SHP with 16 points, followed by Matthew Norris (12) and Alberto De Bernardis (11). Jai Gerrodette led the Priory (15-5, 3-2 WBAL) with 14 points, followed by Noah Gallon with 11. – Christian Babcock

Santa Teresa 91, Willow Glen 88

A stunning comeback brought Santa Teresa all the way back to win in this BVAL showdown. The Saints (10-10, 4-4) trailed 58-42 at the half, and their largest deficit was 21 points. But a 20-17 third-quarter advantage trimmed Willow Glen’s lead to 13, setting the stage for a fourth-quarter masterclass. 

Santa Teresa outscored the Rams 29-13 in the final period to secure the win. Evan Guillermo led the Saints with 26 points, supported by Alex Peoples (20), Kas Bayatoni (18) and Ayden Bobbitt (11). Caiden Morefield led Willow Glen (11-9, 5-3) with 30 points, buttressed by Davian Kennedy (23) and Ryder Ingram (16). – Christian Babcock

No. 3 Menlo-Atherton 5, Sequoia 1

The Bears remained undefeated on the season and in PAL Bay Division competition with a convincing victory over Sequoia. Menlo-Atherton (11-0-4) broke a scoreless draw in the 35th minute when Nathan Thurlow turned a thru-ball from Ayden Wise into a goal. 

In the first few seconds after halftime, Manases Lara-Alvarez took the pass from Thurlow and lobbed the keeper to score a spectacular goal to open the second half. Yandel Hernandez and Lucas Selvik also scored off assists by Thurlow to pad the lead. Thurlow capped his incredible two-goal, three-assist night by scoring one more time before the final whistle. – Joseph Dycus

Hillsdale 5, San Mateo 0

The Knights rolled past San Mateo in a PAL Ocean Division matchup to improve to 12-1-2, 5-0-1. Jaxon Bunch scored the opener and also had an assist, while Luke Lawton bagged a goal on a penalty kick. 

Connor Gilbert got a goal past the keeper off an assist by Chris Lopez, and scored another off a Bunch pass. Bernardo Chaparro banged in a shot thanks to a Tyler Hughes assist, and also assisted a goal. Hillsdale coach Jaime Gomez said Hillsdale played an “entertaining style with a creative ball movement.” as San Mateo dropped to 4-10, 2-4. – Joseph Dycus

GIRLS SOCCER

Bishop O’Dowd 6, Castro Valley 0

Bishop O’Dowd’s unbeaten start to the season continued as the Dragons defeated Castro Valley in a WACC Foothill Division rout. O’Dowd (12-0-2, 6-0) got two goals and a pair of assists from Chloe Keating. Koffy’e Chappel scored once, Paloma John-Baptiste got one goal and two assists, and Kacey DeMarco and Ana Pintard each scored once. Remi Hayes dished out two assists too. Castro Valley fell to 4-6-1, 2-3-1.  – Joseph Dycus

No. 8 Los Gatos 2, Los Altos 1

The Wildcats slipped past fellow SCVAL De Anza Division team Los Altos after Jordan Park and Ale Munneke each got a goal past the keeper. Los Gatos improved to 9-2-5, 6-0-2 on the season. Los Altos sophomore midfielder Brooke Neschleba scored for the Eagles, who fell to 4-8-2, 3-4-1. Los Gatos coach Jessica Ingram told the Bay Area News Group, “It was a well fought match from both teams.” – Joseph Dycus

Mills 7, Oceana 3

The Vikings attack could not be stopped in its high-scoring victory over Oceana in PAL Lake Division competition. Mills senior Abigael Zennadi earned a hattrick, scoring three goals. Jocelyn Kwan got two goals past the keeper, and Reece Roach and Citlaly Gerardo Hernandez each scored once as the Vikings improved to 9-4, 5-0. Oceana dropped to 2-2, 2-1. – Joseph Dycus
