Rounding up all Warriors and NBA related news for Tuesday, January 21st.

In today’s Dub Hub:

A lack of offensive firepower has been the Golden State Warriors’ biggest problem these past couple of seasons. After the Warriors’ humiliating 125-85 loss to the Boston Celtics on Monday afternoon, Stephen Curry opened up about the team’s lingering scoring problem.

The 40-point blowout marked the largest home loss of the season. The Warriors were unable to find offensive rhythm, shooting just 34.8% from the field and a dismal 26.4% from three-point range. Curry finished the night as the team’s leading scorer with 18 points, while Moses Moody was the only other Warrior to score double digits.

Curry’s comments reflect a broader concern about the team’s inconsistency on offense. The Warriors sit at 21-21 and currently rank 20th in offensive rating halfway through the season. Monday’s loss underscored the widening gap between them and a Celtics team that they defeated in the NBA Finals just three seasons ago, heightening the calls to shake things up if they want to remain competitive.

Warriors News:

Golden State Warriors post worst home loss in Steve Kerr era | ESPN

“It’s incredibly significant for our season,” Curry said. “You’d hope to be a better home team than you are on the road. ... We’ll see how we respond to it and if we can take advantage of this stretch. Tonight was not great; Captain Obvious statement.

“But just the idea that we can keep ourselves afloat until we get some guys back can kind of make or break our season to be honest, to keep it real. ... Nobody’s counting game-by-game type thing, but a six- to eight-game stretch can kind of define where we are going forward the rest of the season.”

But both Western Conference executives expect the Warriors to wait and see what the market will be on a player such as Chicago Bulls big man Nikola Vucevicas the Feb. 6 deadline nears. Vucevic would give Curry a much-needed scorer. The ideal situation for the Warriors would be expiring contracts for Vucevic, who makes $20 million this season.

The Western Conference executives also noted that if the Warriors slide even further in the standings, they could make a move to cut their luxury tax bill.

Draymond Green sidelined as Warriors enter ‘make or break’ stretch of schedule | The Athletic

This was the first of what will be several missed games for Draymond Green, who limped off three minutes into Saturday night’s win over the Washington Wizards and has been ruled out for at least a week with a strained left calf. That means the Warriors will be without Green and Jonathan Kumingaagainst the Sacramento Kings, Chicago Bullsand Los Angeles Lakers this week.

Brandin Podziemski and Kyle Anderson could return soon. But Kuminga will remain out significantly longer, and there is no guarantee Green will be seen during the upcoming six-game homestand, which closes with the Utah Jazz, Oklahoma City Thunder, Phoenix Sunsand Orlando Magic. That means the Warriors will be without their two best frontcourt players in a stretch Steph Curry called “make or break” for the direction of their season.

Bulls’ Matas Buzelis, Spurs’ Stephon Castle in All-Star dunk contest, sources say | ESPN

Buzelis, selected by the Bulls with the 11th pick last June, has played fewer than 13 minutes per game for Chicago but is no stranger to All-Star Weekend, participating in the 2024 Rising Stars game as part of a team made up of G Leaguers.

Castle, taken fourth by San Antonio, has emerged as a contender for rookie of the year as the floor-general-in-waiting for Victor Wembanyama’s Spurs. Castle is coming off the best stretch of his rookie campaign, headlined by three straight 20-point performances last week.

Wolves’ Donte DiVincenzo (left toe sprain) out indefinitely | NBA

The Minnesota Timberwolves will be without guard Donte DiVincenzo indefinitely, the team announced today. DiVincenzo suffered a “left great toe” injury at the end of the Wolves’ 116-115 loss to the Denver Nuggets on Jan. 15.

Per the team, DiVincenzo has a “Grade 3 left great toe sprain” and will be out indefinitely.

Player grades: Warriors vs. Celtics

Andrew Wiggins

24 minutes, 4 points, 3 rebounds, 1 steal, 1 block, 1 turnover, 4 fouls, 1-for-11 shooting, 0-for-4 threes, 2-for-2 free throws, 16.8% TS, -29

I owe Wiggins an apology. On Saturday, in the team’s win over the Washington Wizards, Wiggins had arguably his best game of the season. He scored a game-high 31 points, and it felt like each bucket was incredibly important. He grabbed 11 rebounds. He was wildly efficient. He played awesome defense.

And I unfortunately did not have the time to do a player grades article for that game.

I do have time today, when Wiggins had one of his worst games of the year. He was a non-factor on defense, a non-factor on the glass, and a negative-factor on offense. He looked lethargic and uninterested.

He would have had an A+ on Saturday; I just feel the need to say that.

Grade: F+

Post-game bonus: Tied for the worst plus/minus on the team.
