YouTube Gold: Duke vs. Georgia Tech In 1985

0 2
UNITED STATES - MARCH 21: College Basketball: NCAA Playoffs, Duke Johnny Dawkins (24) in action vs DePaul, East Rutherford, NJ 3/21/1986  | SetNumber: X32862

There were a lot of classic elements in this game

Arguably, the 1980’s were the peak of ACC Basketball.

You had Dean Smith’s UNC program, Lefty Driesell was still doing well at Maryland, Terry Holland had Ralph Sampson at Virginia, Jim Valvano was starting his legendary ride at NC State, Duke was getting cranked up under Mike Krzyzewski and Georgia Tech had Bobby Cremins.

Valvano, Krzyzewski and Cremins all arrived at pretty much the same time and for a while, the Duke-Georgia Tech rivalry was as good as any in the country.

In 1985, Mark Price and Johnny Dawkins were three years into a personal rivalry and Duke and Georgia Tech put on some epic contests.

When the Yellow Jackets came to Cameron that year, they featured Price, Bruce Dalrymple, John Salley, Duane Ferrell, Yvan Joseph and Price. Cremins was famous for minimal substitutions so those guys were essentially iron men.

Duke countered with Mark Alarie, Dan Meaghar, Jay Bilas, Tommy Amaker and of course Dawkins.

Tech had won the first game in Atlanta but winning in Cameron has never been easy. And it didn't happen this time.

Price won his matchup with Dawkins 26-8, but his teammates made up the difference. Tommy Amaker had a very Amakerish game with eight assists, no turnovers and four steals.

The Yellow Jackets would get their revenge in a few weeks when they beat Duke 75-64 in the ACC Tournament.
