Golden State basketball is on the way! Come join our game thread and chat about tonight’s matchup here.

The Golden State Warriors host the Memphis Grizzlies on Friday for their second game of the NBA Cup. The game will be played at 7:00 PM PT in San Francisco and can be watched on NBC Sports Bay Area.

Previously with the Warriors:

Golden State kicked off the NBA Cup with a thrilling 120-117 victory over the Dallas Mavericks on Tuesday night. Of course, the bigger story was the return of Klay Thompson, who stepped onto the Chase Center floor to take on his former team for the first time since leaving this past offseason.

After a touching pregame tribute, the two sides went at each other in a playoff-like battle. Thompson would go on to finish the night with 22 points, including six three-pointers. However, it was Stephen Curry who had the last laugh in this Splash Brother battle, scoring the Warriors’ final 12 points of the game to cap off a 37-point performance.

What to watch for tonight:

The Warriors now shift their attention to tonight’s matchup against the Grizzlies. However, both sides enter the game dealing with injuries to their lineup.

Golden State’s De’Anthony Melton played great these past two games as a starter, but unfortunately, he suffered a sprained ACL against the Mavs on Tuesday which will keep him sidelined for an unknown period of time.

Memphis faces even bigger challenges on the injury front. All-Star point guard Ja Morant remains out with a hip injury, and multiple starters are listed as questionable.

Despite these setbacks, the Grizzlies’ size, particularly in the frontcourt, is a formidable threat to the Warriors. Starting power forward Jaren Jackson Jr. leads the team with 22.5 points per game while their 7-foot-4, first round rookie, Zach Edey, has impressed off the bench, averaging 11.2 points, 6.8 rebounds, and 0.9 blocks per game.

If Golden State wants to win, they’ll have to continue to do it with defense being the major emphasis. The Warriors still rank as the fourth-best defensive team in the league as their depth allows them to play with a high intensity at all times. It also helps that Draymond Green, who continues to play at a Defensive Player of the Year level, sets the tone on that side of the floor.
