ACC Roundup - Syracuse Struggles (Again)

Not looking great for the ‘Cuse so far

In Tuesday’s ACC Action, just about everyone won: Florida State beat Tarleton State 72-52, Syracuse survived Colgate 74-72, Clemson topped Eastern Kentucky 75-62, Georgia Tech handled Texas Southern 81-62 and Stanford clobbered Northern Arizona 90-64.

FSU limited Billie Clyde Gillispie’s Texans to 31 percent from the floor and forced 13 second-half turnovers to roll to an easy win. How easy?

The bench got 38 points - and this despite the ‘Noles shooting just 4-21 from deep and 24-38 from the line. It could have been a lot worse.

This is kind of cool: no one from FSU scored more than nine points.

Here’s a surprising stat: Colgate had 11 fast break points to none for Syracuse. The Orange should be the dominant team against Colgate, basically always.

Didn’t happen.

Syracuse just couldn’t pull away. Eddie Lampkin hit a shot with 42 seconds left to put the ‘Cuse up 72-70 and Colgate couldn’t manage another score.

By itself it wouldn’t be a huge worry but after Syracuse barely beat Le Moyne?

It’s almost a trend.

Clemson had a tight situation in the second half before the Tigers ripped off a 25-8 run to close the Colonels out. BC transfer Jaden Zackery led a stout late defensive push, clamping down on EKU’s Devontae Blanton.

Here’s another trend: the Tigers shot just 28 percent from behind the line.

Victor Lahkin had 19 points and 12 rebounds. Chase Hunter had 19 points, five board and three assists.

Georgia Tech bounced back from a tough loss to Northern Florida with a nice win over Texas Southern. Doryan Onwuchekwa got his first start with Luke O’Brien being injured and didn’t score but did pull down nine boards. Baye Ndongo had 19 points and 11 boards and Naithan George, after a poor game against Northern Florida, had 16 points, six assists and three boards.

In the late West Coast game, Stanford had no trouble with the Lumberjacks - this one was over early. Maxime Raynaud had 22 points, 11 rebounds and two assists. Oziyah Sellers had 17 points.

You can’t learn a whole lot from this game, but so far, Stanford appears to be doing well under new coach Kyle Smith.

On Wednesday, NC State hosts Coastal Carolina, Wake Forest welcomes South Carolina Upstate and Cal visits Vandy and its funky funky gym.
