Kyle Singler Update

0 16
College Basketball: NCAA Playoffs: Duke Kyle Singler (12) in action vs Purdue Keaton Grant (5). Houston, TX 3/26/2010 | Set Number: X83962 TK1 R3 F27

And unfortunately, it’s not particularly good.

In 2009, we got the chance to roam around Duke’s practice facility a bit. If you remember that year, you’ll remember that the margin of error was incredibly thin: Duke had a very thin backcourt with freshman Andre Dawkins, junior Nolan Smith and some guy named Scheyer.

Not sure what happened to him.

Anyway, someone had to be ready to help out and the guy who was called on was Kyle Singler.

Prior to that season, he had bulked up to play in the front court but when we went through the practice facility, he was on the court by himself and had lost a tremendous amount of weight. Two things were clear to immediately clear: first, the backcourt had coverage and second, Duke had a shot at an excellent season.

And Singler had a great season too, helping lead Duke to an incredible championship win over Butler.

He was drafted into the NBA where he played for the Detroit Pistons from 2012-15 and for Oklahoma City from 2015-18. He wound up his career overseas in 2019.

On Tuesday a couple of disturbing videos that Singler made surfaced. It seemed pretty clear that he’s not well and messages came in from old friends and teammates urging him to seek help.

We hope that he seeks it out. He’s still young and so much of life is still ahead of him. He seems to be struggling now but that doesn’t necessarily have to last forever.

We’re also sure that, like his former teammates and friends who are worried about him and who reached out already, a lot of people will rally around Singler as he comes to terms with whatever is going on.

Like all Duke fans and decent people everywhere, we’re worried about him too and hope that he’s okay. If you’re inclined to pray, perhaps you could include him for a while.
