Warriors to honor Jerry West with court decal during upcoming season

As the Golden State Warriors get ready to kick off the 2024-25 NBA season next week, and chase their fifth championship in the last 11 seasons, they’ll do it with constant reminders of some franchise legends. A few weeks after announcing that the team would wear a patch on their jerseys with the number 16 to honor Al Attles, Golden State revealed that the court at Chase Center will have a decal with the initials and signature of the great Jerry West.

The decal will be on the sideline near the broadcast table, on Golden State’s side of the court. It will remain there for the entirety of the upcoming season.

West, who is the only three-time inductee into the Hall of Fame — once as a player, once as a member of the Team USA squad that won gold at the 1960 Olympics, and, on Sunday, as an executive — died in June at the age of 86. While he’s best known for his time with the Lakers, where he played for all 14 of his NBA seasons (and made the All-Star team each year), coached, worked as a scout, and was general manager for nearly two decades, West is an integral part of the Warriors history, too. He served as an executive board member with Golden State for six years, during which time he helped oversee countless critical decisions — and reportedly was the leading voice in pushing the team to not trade Klay Thompson early in the sharpshooter’s career.

In addition to the court decal, the Warriors will be reminded of West every time they suit up, since it’s West’s profile that serves as the NBA’s logo. The Dubs will also hold a moment of silence honoring West at Friday night’s preseason finale against the Los Angeles Lakers.
