Bit of deja vu

After a lengthy break, the Duke Chronicle resumes the annual series of player profiles with this one of Cameron Sheffield.

Actually, Sheffield gets two profiles - Caleb Dudley did the first one, on August 19th. This one is by Dean Harder. The more the merrier!

A transfer from Rice, Sheffield’s a bit of a mystery since he sat out last season with a foot injury.

Sheffield was a solid player there, but it’s not like Rice is a powerhouse. He averaged 7.6 ppg, 6.1 rpg and 1.3 apg. He’s not a great shooter - in 2022-23 - his last active season - Sheffield hit 43 percent overall and 37.3 from behind the line. That’s solid but not spectacular.

That doesn’t really matter this year since Duke should have plenty of shooters and Sheffield’s role is likely to be as a defender and a hustle guy.

From the Chronicle: “It’s unlikely that Sheffield will see significant court time right away given the Blue Devils’ depth of talent, including key returners like Caleb Foster and standout freshmen like Cooper Flagg. Though Sheffield brings valuable experience and versatility, he’s joining a stacked lineup, and his role may initially be more limited as he adjusts to playing at the ACC level. If he demonstrates strong rebounding and hustle, he could earn minutes, but Sheffield will likely serve as a rotational player unless injuries or matchups shift the lineup.“

That’s most likely true, but given his experience, when he’s called on, he’ll be able to help the team.
