And that means Bobby Hurley vs. Kenny Anderson

A lot of people wouldn't remember this, but before Duke broke through in 1991, winning the national championship after beating UNLV and Kansas, the Blue Devils were widely seen as an admirable underdog.

It’s almost as distant now, but during the same era, Bobby Cremins turned Georgia Tech into one of the best and coolest programs around.

They had a tremendous rivalry during those years.

In 1990, Duke and Georgia Tech met in the old Thriller Dome. Duke was missing Robert Brickey but did have sophomore Christian Laettner and freshman point guard Bobby Hurley, among others.

Georgia Tech countered with their famous Lethal Weapon Three - mad bomber Dennis Scott, do-it all Brian Oliver and freshman phenom Kenny Anderson. His high school build up was incredible and even before the dawn of social media, everyone knew everything about Anderson.

Both were heavily recruited by UNC with Anderson infamously saying he didn’t want to be “another horse in Dean Smith’s stable.”

Hurley did want to go to UNC, but the Tar Heels had picked up King Rice the yerar before and didn’t have room for Hurley, which worked out well for Duke.

In this game, Duke came in at #10 and Georgia Tech #9 and the Blue Devils left with a 96-91 win.

The Yellow Jackets have mostly been bad since Cremins left but Damon Stoudamire showed promise in his first year. We’d like to see them be good again. The ACC is better when the Yellow Jackets are tough.
