Former UNC Captain Joe Wolf Passes Away

0 2
College Basketball: NCAA Playoffs: North Carolina Joe Wolf (24) in action vs Notre Dame at Brendan Byrne Arena. East Rutherford, NJ 3/19/1987  | Set Number: X34563 TK2 R9 F22

Apparently unexpectedly. Very sad news.

The Duke-UNC rivalry burns hot, but unlike a lot of other rivalries, we live cheek by jowl in the 15-501 corridor so you have to get along. You can’t just go over there and poison the trees or anything, like that great goober Alabama fan did to Toomer’s Corner at Auburn.

We’re neighbors, friends, and the more daring among us intermarry (those who do have separate TVs for game day but more or less get along otherwise).

And once players move on, you have to admit that you like some of the guys who played for your rivals.

For us, Dante Calabria always seemed like a good guy. Shammond Williams came over to K-ville on year and hung out and said he liked the Duke kids. How could you hate him after that? Bobby Jones, an immensely decent man, said he’d rather quit the NBA than rely on playing dirty. And anyone who ultimately didn’t respect the late Eric Montross was an idiot. He was a good man.

And that brings us to Joe Wolf.

He was an excellent player at UNC and always seemed like a decent man. It was really hard to hate on him.

Sadly, he passed away Thursday. All anyone has said so far was that it was unexpected.

He clearly touched a lot of people’s lives. We’re sorry to hear that he’s gone. Our deepest condolences to his family, loved ones and our UNC friends as well.
