A forgotten thriller

In 1992, Duke was coming off of one national championship and chasing another. It wasn't easy.

First, the team was everyone’s target and there was a hysteria that was so intense that reportedly at one point, Bobby Hurley had to be snuck out of an arena in an equipment bag.

It wasn’t that way at Maryland. Far from it.

The Terps were still struggling to get past the Len Bias scandal. Not just his death, but the apparent coverup that happened afterwards and various unflattering things about Lefty Driesell’s program that came to light.

Gary Williams took over in 1989 after Bob Wade flamed out and his first three seasons were ok under the circumstances but hardly great.

In 1991-92, as Duke was hitting remarkable high points, Maryland was putting together a 14-15 season.

When the Terps came to Cameron in 1992, Bobby Hurley was out with an injury and Duke was more vulnerable than it would have been otherwise, and Maryland pushed them to the final seconds. Thomas Hill missed his second free throw before a fatal turnover (watch his face - he knows that he missed it) denied the Terrapins a chance to tie or win the game.
