Steve Kerr on Jayson Tatum not getting playing time: It’s just hard to play 11 people, even in an NBA game

Jayson Tatum has not played in two of the five U.S. games at the Paris Olympics, held out of both matchups against Serbia. And once again, U.S. coach Steve Kerr said Friday that it’s not an indictment of Tatum. “It’s not what I’m not seeing from Jayson. It’s what I’ve seen from the other guys,” Kerr said. “Like I’ve said many times during this tournament and this last six weeks, it’s just hard to play 11 people, even in an NBA game.”

A great line from a Le Monde journalist to Steve Kerr, who tells him that for the home nation, playing this game against the U.S. for gold “is like playing the Super Bowl on top of Mount Everest.”

Jayson Tatum was once again a DNP-CD in a game where it felt like he could have helped. I’ve got reaction in my new @LOCeltics podcast, up early on YouTube.

USA’s Steve Kerr on win over Serbia: “Our coaches were saying Villanova-Georgetown for all of our older readers & viewers. [Serbia] played the perfect game. They forced us to reach the highest level of competition that we could find. Our guys were incredible in that 4th quarter.” – 6:05 PM

The Great Escape. The US will play for gold after rallying past Serbia. “They forced us to reach the highest level of competition that we could find. And our guys were incredible in that fourth quarter, and they got it done,” Steve Kerr said.

My biggest argument for Jayson Tatum – and this shouldn’t be an argument – is that you can play LeBron and Tatum and Steph and KD and Embiid and switch almost everything and you have the best point guard in the world to still run your offense – 5:41 PM

More on this storyline

Brandy Cole, Jayson Tatum’s mother, threw some shade at Steve Kerr and the rest of the Team USA coaching staff. The Celtics superstar’s mom retweeted a post by Dan Greenberg of Barstool Sports which may outline what she felt when her son was just left sitting there. The post said, “If Kerr is watching this and willingly deciding, ‘Yeah, Jayson Tatum couldn’t help here.” Then, he legitimately cannot coach in 2028.” -via Clutch Points / August 9, 2024
When he was asked afterward about the challenges of finding a rhythm with his role fluctuating so much, he chuckled before answering. “I don’t know,” Tatum said. “Each game is extremely different, but the main thing is that we win, so whatever we’ve got to do or I’ve got to do from game to game to be a part of that and contribute when I can, I’m going to do that.” -via Boston Globe / August 7, 2024
