Luke Travers granted release from Melbourne United
Travers has an opportunity to join the Cavs
The Cleveland Cavaliers haven’t added anyone to the roster or signed a two-way player this offseason. That could be changing soon as Melbourne United has released Luke Travers from his contract.

Travers was a second-round draft pick for the Cavs in the 2022 NBA Draft. As such, Cleveland has his rights if he’s going to come over to the NBA. They would need to add him to their roster, but they’re the only team that can currently do so.
The Cavs have room to sign him to a standard or two-way contract. They currently have three roster spots open and all three two-way slots available. Cleveland did extend a qualifying offer to Emoni Bates which likely means he will be returning in that role.
Travers spoke before his third Summer League in July that his goal is to make a positive impact in the NBA. Whether or not he’s ready to do so is an open question and not one we’ll ever get an answer for if he doesn’t come over to the U.S. to play.
“The goal for me is to be a good role player in the NBA,” Travers said before the most recent Summer League. “I’m just trying to show that I can do that. Whether it’s Summer League, whether it’s in the NBA, it kind of doesn’t matter. I’m gonna go out there and do the little things, rebound, push the pace, make the extra pass, all that kind of thing.”
Travers has spent five seasons playing in Australia’s NBL. He’s averaged 7.9 points on .490/.329/.692 shooting splits with five rebounds and 1.9 assists per game. This past season with Melbourne, Travers contributed 12 points, 7.6 rebounds, and 1.9 assists per game on .516/.327/.671 shooting splits.
