Giannis Antetokounmpo leads Greece to a 77-71 win vs. Australia

0 3
Despite winning 77-71, Greece’s faith is still unclear but they locked the 3rd position in Group A. Australia, on the other side, will qualify if Spain loses to Canada in the upcoming match; if Sergio Scariolo’s team wins, the Boomers will be out after getting the bronze in Tokyo. At this point, if Serbia beats South Sudan by three points or more, both Greece and Brazil will qualify for the Quarter-Finals of the Olympics after respectively beating Australia and Japan in today’s first games. 16 years after their last victory in the Olympic Games, the Greek national team found success once again on the Olympic stage thanks to 20 points, 7 rebounds, and 6 assists from Giannis Antetokounmpo. Thomas Walkup added 18 points, while Dinos Mitoglou and Vasilis Toliopoulos shared 13 points.

Giannis Antetokounmpo did a great job finding Toliopoulos for the 3 with Australia cheating off of him.
Knowing they’d do it again, he tried Toliopoulos again on the next possession, but the Greek guard couldn’t make it two in a row.

I was wondering when Greece might try a more direct route here in the fourth quarter.

More on this storyline

“Everything you know, put it on the side. Here we are doing it for a common goal, which is to win at all costs. It’s not winning the way that you want. Because we are representing our history here, we are representing 10 million Greeks. Here it is totally different”, he commented. This turned out to be even more powerful as he became his country’s flag-bearer at the opening ceremony. “It was unbelievable. The energy was extremely high going. I think there were thousands of athletes in the Paris Olympic Village. Seeing how everybody carried themselves and how everybody has a little bit of pressure you can see it in their eyes as much as they want to admit it, but once we got in the boat and we lifted up the flag, we were going through”, the Greek Freak commented. -via EuroHoops.net / August 2, 2024
Finishing the game with a huge three-pointer and one steal to stop Australia’s comeback, Thomas Walkup’s contribution in Greece’s 77-71 victory in Lille was visible. The Greek playmaker finished with 18 points and stopped by in the mixed zone after the final buzzer. “This is Greek basketball. This is who we are. This is how we play. This is the passion, the intensity, the swagger. This is who we are. Today I thought we did a really good job of locking in for larger parts of the game, and the scoreboard reflects up”, he opened. -via EuroHoops.net / August 2, 2024
“Now we wait”, he said about his team’s fate in Lille. “It’ll be very interesting watching the next couple of games to see what happens. With stress, because so much is on the line. That’s the best thing about the Olympics: so much is on the line. Ten million people’s hopes and dreams, along with our own, are on the line”, Thomas Walkup continued. -via EuroHoops.net / August 2, 2024
