Schauffele won the final major championship of the year, but how much of a dent did that make in the FedEx Cup race?

Welcome to Playing Through’s morning ritual: Golf Talk Today.

Each morning will feature a Golf Talk Today, in which the crew will discuss various elements of the PGA Tour, LIV Golf and other professional golf tournaments.

Let’s examine the FedEx Cup race after the four major championships. Two tournaments remain — the 3M Open and Wyndham Championship. Players are scrambling to earn as many points as possible to give themselves the best chance at extending their season.

Scottie Scheffler won the Masters to start the major season and has six total wins on the year. After Scheffler’s Masters win, it was all Xander Schauffele. He won the PGA and Open Championship to claim two of the four top tournaments.

Bryson DeChambeau won the third major, the U.S. Open at Pinehurst, but he does not get FedEx Cup points since he is on the LIV Golf Tour.

More FedEx Cup Playoff changes

Last year, the PGA Tour shortened the playoff field in the first event. It is no longer the top 125 but the Top 70 players.

They will take on TPC Southwind for the FedEx St. Jude Championship in Memphis Aug 15- 18.

The Top 50 will play at Castle Pines Golf Course in Colorado for the BMW Championship Aug. 22-25. Finally, the Top 30 players will tee it up in Atlanta Aug. 28-Sept.1 at East Lake to compete in the Tour Championship.

Since 2019, the PGA Tour has implemented a stroke-based system for the Tour Championship. The FedEx Cup points leader begins the tournament at 10-under, and the strokes decrease from there.

The first two playoff events have $20 million purses, and this year, the FedEx Cup winner will take home $25 million, a massive increase from last year’s $18 million.
