UNITED STATES - MARCH 28: College Basketball: NCAA Playoffs, Duke Christian Laettner (32) in action, making game winning, buzzer beating shot with 2,1 seconds left vs Kentucky, Philadelphia, PA 3/28/1992 | SetNumber: X42667 TK7 R2 F19

What a miserable trip that must have turned out to be

Duke fans have watched and marveled over Christian Laettner’s epic 1992 buzzer beater that demoralized the state of Kentucky for years. It’s one of the most iconic plays in the history of the game and we celebrate it. So does the NCAA tournament - it’s always part of the promos and ads.

Imagine it from a Kentucky perspective though.

Imagine you and your wife are Wildcat fans and you watch the game in a New Orleans hotel room. Imagine your wife has a camcorder - it’s 1992 remember and not everyone had one - and she tapes the tail end of overtime.

You go through all the emotions of thinking that Kentucky is about to pull off a massive, redeeming upset after the awful end of the Eddie Sutton era.

Your sweet, supportive wife is asking questions like “they can’t win with two seconds left, can they?”

She’s filming your every reaction, including the one at the end where you throw something at the TV.

And years later, your child finds it and posts it on YouTube.

The video quality is not great but the satisfaction for Duke fans?

Very, very high.
