Golf Talk Today: Get ready for another classic course in Newport Country Club for U.S. Senior Open

The best players in the world 50 years and older will compete in the U.S. Senior Open at Newport Country Club this week.

Each morning will feature a Golf Talk Today, in which the crew will discuss various elements of the PGA Tour, LIV Golf, and other professional golf tournaments.

Today, we want to talk about the U.S. Senior Open.

Newport Country Club, located on the Rhode Island shoreline along the Atlantic Ocean, will host this event for the first time this week.

It will mark the club’s first United States Golf Association (USGA) Championship since 2006, when Annika Sorenstam won the U.S. Women’s Open. Newport also welcomed the top amateur players in the world in 1995 for the U.S. Amateur, which Tiger Woods won for the second consecutive year.

Before that, Newport staged the inaugural U.S. Amateur and U.S. Open championships in 1895, less than a year after the foundation of the USGA. Newport, along with Shinnecock Hills, The Country Club at Brookline, St. Andrew’s Club in Yonkers, New York, and Chicago Golf Club, formed the USGA in December 1894. Those original meeting minutes now proudly sit in the USGA Museum in Liberty Corner, New Jersey.

Nevertheless, the USGA conducts four professional championships each year, with the U.S. Senior Open typically falling third in line on the annual schedule.

So far this year, Lancaster Country Club hosted the U.S. Women’s Open, Pinehurst No. 2 staged the U.S. Open, and the U.S. Senior Women’s Open, established in 2018, will head to Fox Chapel Golf Club in Pittsburgh in August.

That’s a pretty impressive list of courses, as the USGA prides itself on bringing its championships to the “Cathedrals of the Game.”

That mantra certainly holds true for the seniors, so here is where the USGA will host the U.S. Senior Open in future years:

2025: Broadmoor Golf Club, Colorado Springs, Colorado

2026: Scioto Country Club, Columbus, Ohio

2027: Oak Tree National, Edmond, Oklahoma

2028: Crooked Stick Golf Club, Carmel, Indiana

2029: Prairie Dunes, Hutchinson, Kansas

2030: Spyglass Hill Golf Course, Pebble Beach, California

2031: TBD

2032: Saucon Valley Country Club, Bethlehem, Pennsylvania
