Tyson fills a hole on the wing for the Cavs.

The Cleveland Cavaliers select Jaylon Tyson, wing from California, in the 2024 NBA Draft. Tyson, 21, averaged 19.6 points, 6.8 rebounds, and 3.5 assists on .465/.360/.796 shooting splits. He earned 2024 All-Pac-12 First Team honors after ranking third in the conference in points.

Tyson fills a hole at the wing at 6’ 6”. He is a good ballhandler for his position with skills as a scorer and a passer. He’s a three-level scorer who’s shown upside as a three-point shooter as he connected on 37.2% of his threes during his three college seasons at Texas, Texas Tech, and then Cal.

Defense is a question mark for Tyson. He has the frame and ability to be good on that end. His rebounding ability does offset some of these concerns.

Wings are the most coveted position in the NBA. The Cavs have seen firsthand how difficult it is to acquire one. This has left them trying to fit Max Strus and Isaac Okoro into positions that they aren’t the most suited to play. Tyson has the potential to fill that void.

The Cavaliers are amid a critical offseason. There are uncertainties about whether Darius Garland or Jarrett Allen are going to be on the team at the start of next season. However, no matter the outlook of the team, it’s clear that they need more options on the wing. Now it’s about whether the Cavs can help Tyson reach his potential.
