Mike Gansey says they will “be aggressive” in looking for a second-round pick

The Cavs may not be done with the draft.

Cleveland Cavaliers’ general manager, Mike Gansey, admitted after the first round that their team might not be done with the NBA Draft even though they currently don’t own a second-round pick.

“We’re gonna be aggressive,” Gansey said. “Leading up to this whole thing, we know what teams could potentially move picks. We’re always trying to get better and obviously, look at the board now that it’s been adjusted. That’s what’s nice is you can kind of take a deep breath and reshuffle your board in some way and see where the teams are and the players are at and see if you can grab some.”

Gansey repeatedly emphasized that they got their guy in Jaylon Tyson. They needed a wing and Gansey believes that Tyson is big enough to fill that role. That said, there are other holes on the roster that the team needs additional depth in. That doesn’t rule out trading back into the second round to grab another wing like Johnny Furphy or add additional front-court depth which Gansey admitted is an area the team is looking to add in as well.

“That’s definitely something we got to get better at,” Gansey said of the big rotation. “We looked at bigs obviously [with the 20th pick] because we know that’s an area we need to improve, but Jalen [Tyson] was just the guy that we liked more.”

If the Cavs did want to move into the second round for a big, Kyle Filipowski from Duke is someone who is still available.

The stricter apron rules make it more difficult for teams to keep adding talent when their payroll increases. That makes nailing picks outside the lottery and even in the second round so important. That, more than anything, is why it seems the Cavs are going to turn over every stone they can in order to improve this team.

“It’s hard because with these aprons there’s so many restrictions on what teams can do,” Gansey said. “We might get expensive here soon. . . The way the new rules are set it’s just tough for teams. Some of those teams at the top are just so limited in what they can do.”

Don’t be surprised if the Cavs try to buy their way into one on Thursday.
