Jayson Tatum on potentially not winning Finals MVP: I would not be the slightest bit sad

0 3
Malika Andrews: With the Celtics one win away from the title, the Finals MVP race is far from decided. But how important is winning the Bill Russell Trophy to Jayson Tatum? Jayson Tatum: “Isiah Thomas didn’t win Finals MVP every time. Tim Duncan didn’t win Finals MVP every time. Larry Bird. Steph Curry only has one. Kobe won two out of five championships. As a competitor, you want to win and accomplish everything in front of you, absolutely. But I would not be the slightest bit sad, you know, that I didn’t win Finals MVP. I would be ecstatic just to win the Finals.”

More on this storyline

“Joe did a great job today of reminding us that it’s OK to smile during wars,” Tatum said. “It’s OK to have fun during high-pressure moments. We would love to win tomorrow, more than anything. But if it doesn’t happen, it’s not the end of the world. We have more opportunities. So just setting that (mindset) of ‘Don’t surrender to that idea that we have to win tomorrow.’ We would love to, absolutely. But Game 5 is the biggest game of the season because it’s the next game on the schedule. So (it’s) going with that mindset and just have fun. That’s really what we talked about today. Get back to having fun and being a team and how special we are and the team that got us here.” -via New York Times / June 17, 2024
Between his mother making sure he saved his NBA salary and having a baby to take care of, it helped him not get caught up in the lifestyle of excess. “I know that having Deuce at that age grounded me,” Tatum said. “Because whatever decision I wanted to make, I had to make sure that he was taken care of.” -via New York Times / June 16, 2024
Tatum said he was “a little selfish” when he learned he would be a father because he was about to chase his dream and didn’t want anything in the way of it. He worried it would affect his draft stock and the perception of him as a 19-year-old entering the league. “I’d be the first to say I wasn’t, like, super thrilled to find out I was going to be a dad,” he said. “(I) quickly realized that it was, like, the best thing that ever could have happened to me. There’s nothing better than being a dad.” -via New York Times / June 16, 2024
