The Providence guard may not be available at No. 17 when the Lakers could draft him, but Devin Carter has reportedly worked out for the team.

The Lakers disappointingly ended this season, exiting early against the Denver Nuggets in five games.

The guard play left much to be desired, with D’Angelo Russell struggling and performing well below his typical production, averaging 14.2 points and shooting 31.8 percent from deep.

The bench didn’t have any other guards who stepped up either, with Spencer Dinwiddie and Gabe Vincent being nonfactors in the handful of minutes they played.

So, it’s no surprise there have been reports of the Lakers looking to trade their draft picks for a potential star or keeping their No. 17 pick and selecting a player who can contribute immediately.

Regarding the guards in this year’s draft, Devin Carter is an exciting player to watch.

Jovan Buha of The Athletic, in his latest video on his YouTube, talked with Sam Vecenie about Carter working out with the Lakers.

“I know that Devin Carter went and worked out with the Los Angeles Lakers and they had some real degree of interest there. I don’t think they’re necessarily avoiding the backcourt…or anything like that. I don’t think Devin Carter is going to get to [pick No.] 17 by any stretch of the imagination. Like I would put that at a 0.005% chance of him getting to 17.” - Sam Vecenie

Perhaps Vecenie is right and Carter will be gone before the Lakers select at No. 17. However, you have to look at plenty of players and people drop all the time, so until the draft happens, anything can happen.

Carter had a productive season in his final year at Providence, averaging 19.7 points, 8.7 rebounds and 3.6 assists, but could not help his team qualify for March Madness.

He’ll undoubtedly be drafted by an NBA team this June and have a chance to achieve the ultimate individual achievement.

If he falls, the Lakers could be there to pick him up.

And, if they really like what they see, perhaps they can find a way to move up in the draft and add a guard who can be a quality backup they can rely upon for a shift or two a night throughout the marathon that is the NBA season.
