Derrick White thinks Joe Mazulla is 'a basketball genius'
That trust has been reciprocated and it was exemplified in the Celtics’ roller-coaster Game 3 win, putting them one victory from raising championship banner No. 18. “I think Joe is a basketball genius,” White said. “So whatever he says, I’m going to try to just do it to my highest capabilities.”

Derrick White was asked about Joe Mazzulla’s philosophy that the closer you are to winning, that’s when you’re most vulnerable:
“Joe’s consistent the whole time and he’s probably so happy it happened like that so he can continue to tell us that.”

Derrick White shot 34.4 percent from 3 during his career in San Antonio. He shot 39.6 percent in Boston this season. Going from having to be a No. 2 (and on some nights a No. 1) to settling in as a No. 3 or 4 alongside multiple All-NBA players put him in his best possible role. – 11:01 PM

Comes up with a deflection then another steal
Filthy defensive sequence by the Celtics. – 9:56 PM

Over and over, Derrick White’s old coach barked at him to respect the basketball gods. That meant never giving up on a play. Not in late October. Not in early June.
And as he soars to what might be an NBA title? He still hears Pop.

Derrick White’s block on P.J. Washington in the waning moments of Game 2 of the NBA Finals Sunday was one of the better blocks in recent history. But, it can’t make the top five, for one obvious (shove) reason. My best of the best, in @TheAthletic:

More on this storyline
Noa Dalzell: Derrick White names his favorite Joe Mazzulla quote: “When he won coach of the month, I said ‘hey, congratulations.’ And he just looked at me and said ‘nobody cares.’” -via x.com / June 14, 2024
Because where other coaches are watching the Bulls and Timberwolves, Joe Mazzulla prefers to study killer whales and hyenas. Mazzulla, the 35-year-old coach who has the Celtics two wins away from the 18th championship in franchise history, has a fascination with the brutal beauty of the natural world. So when it’s time to inspire his team and instruct them in the ways of teamwork and self sacrifice, he turns to video of Planet Earth’s greatest predators, playing clips of orcas and other hunters as they circle their prey. “It could be anything,” said Celtics guard Derrick White after a Game 2 win over the Dallas Mavericks in the NBA Finals on Sunday night. “A lot of ocean, a lot of nature. He loves that predator-prey lifestyle.” -via Wall Street Journal / June 13, 2024
White’s trust in Mazzulla’s approach revolutionized his career. He was a reticent shooter when he arrived in Boston but was encouraged by his coaches and teammates to launch every time the right shot appeared. “Derrick has a green light to shoot the shots because his skill set is taking the shots that make sense,” Mazzulla said. “He can get into the paint and shoot the two-foot floater off there, he can shoot off the dribble 3s and he can shoot catch-and-shoot 3s. I love the fact that he continues to play. His confidence never wavers based on the shots he takes and you can always count on him to make the big ones.” -via New York Times / June 13, 2024
