Top sophomore Brandon McCoy checks in ahead of NCAA contact period

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — Brandon McCoy, the No. 1 player in the class of 2026, has remained focused on his game as the NCAA Contact period approaches, sparking a busy time for highly touted recruits.
The 6-foot-5 point guard has taken the first two AAU live sessions by storm, averaging 16.3 points and 5.7 rebounds, playing up an age-group on the 17U circuit for Arizona Unity.
With NBA scouts in attendance weekly, McCoy is focused on showing his improved playmaking ability and his goal to be one of the NBA’s elite two-way guards.
“I’ve definitely gotten better with my playmaking and have taken a step there, thanks to my high school coach,” he told ZAGSBLOG. “[I want] to continue to show how good I am on defense. There are not a lot of two-way players in the league, and the ones who are in the league play for a long time. My goal is to get to the league and stay for a while, so being a two-way player would help that.”
The Bellflower, California, native earned a host of accolades following his sophomore campaign with St. John Bosco (CA.). He led the Braves to a Division I state championship, averaging 18.6 points, 8.0 rebounds, 2.4 assists and 2.4 steals per game for the nation’s No. 25 team. He also holds a 4.0 GPA halfway through high school.
McCoy was named Gatorade Sophomore of the Year for his play, an honor that doesn’t tread lightly in the young guard’s mind.
“It means a lot,” he said. “I played only half of my freshman year and didn’t start since I was hurt before that, too, so bouncing back after that means a lot to me.”
He currently holds offers from UCLA, USC, Arizona, Arizona State, Michigan, Kansas and Arkansas, among several other high majors.
McCoy mentioned each school is coming after him equally with no real frontrunners so far.
“[I’m looking] for family for sure,” he said. “People that will trust me, want me to get better and to be the best.”
The Unity begin a three-day weekend stretch Friday against Mac Irvin Fire at 7:00 p.m. ET. McCoy will presumably matchup against class of 2024 top-100 players Bryce Heard or Davion Hannah.
