Kyle Lowry: 'Allen Iverson was one of my biggest basketball influences'

0 5
How did you become a Sixers fan? Kyle Lowry: My mom. My brother. Everybody was a Sixers fan for sure. They loved Dr. J [Julius Erving], Armen Gilliam, Charles Barkley. I was a Dana Barros fan. It goes back a while. You had to watch them on [sports cable channel] PRISM. Only Philadelphia people know what that is. I was watching as many games as I could, NBC games, whenever. They never really was on NBC because they were never good for a while. But every chance I got to watch I would. Who was your biggest basketball influence? Kyle Lowry: A.I. was one of my biggest basketball influences. For sure my brother. But in the NBA, of course we all liked Michael Jordan back then.

Philadelphia #76ers guard Kyle Lowry lives his dream playing in his hometown. The 17-year #NBA veteran talks about seeing Allen Iverson as a kid, Tyrese Maxey and Joel Embiid, what he had to do to get No. 7 from Mo Bamba and more. @andscape bit.ly/3UkHGmy #NBAPlayoffs – 11:52 AM

• Embiid passing up the wide open 10-footer to attack the congested paint and gets stripped by Achiuwa
• Maxey not realizing the call was on for Lowry to miss the free throw intentionally
• Knicks waiting for Joel to put ball on floor to send the double team in the 4th,… – 4:36 PM

You can say what you want about Tobias but I just watched him stand in the corner the entire fourth while Lowry was in actions doing weird things – 4:00 PM
Vivek Jacob @vivekmjacob
Lowry missed that to perfection but he’s gotta make sure his teammates know he’s doing that too – 3:49 PM
Wes Goldberg @wcgoldberg
The Kyle Lowry experience. Shoots maybe the worst brick of the year but gets his own rebound and fouled. – 3:49 PM

Kyle Lowry is an abomination to professional basketball. – 3:48 PM

Second straight crunch time where OG bowled Lowry over while he’s setting a screen in the bonus. This one could be huge. – 3:47 PM

Joel Embiid just looked baseline, where Allen iverson Dawn Staley and Dr. J are sitting, pointed at Isaiah Hartenstein and shook his head as if to say he can’t guard me. Hartenstein how has 4 fouls, two on back-to-back possessions guarding Embiid. – 2:53 PM
Tommy Beer @TommyBeer
Good news – Lowry seems like he will survive!!
In fact, it’s almost like he was fine once they went to review the play – 2:40 PM
Brian Mahoney @briancmahoney
Two things can be true with Kyle Lowry: You can respect the hell out of his career and hate the way he plays. #stoptheflop2:40 PM
Steve Popper @StevePopper
Josh Hart called for 4th foul as he makes move and maybe catches Lowry with an elbow — hard to tell because of the dive that Lowry takes. But nerviest move is Embiid calling for a review – which they get. Replay – no windup, no follow through, common foul. – 2:39 PM
Keith Pompey @PompeyOnSixers
Hart takes out Lowry with an elbow. Some much for the Nova Nation Love. This was Hart’s fourth foul. It is being reviewed for a flagrant foul. – 2:39 PM
Austin Krell @NBAKrell
Oh boy, an elbow from Josh Hart directly into Kyle Lowry’s face. Lowry is down. Offensive foul (4th) on Hart. This might go Flagrant. – 2:38 PM
Eric Koreen @ekoreen
OK, but seriously: Kyle Lowry forever. – 2:33 PM
Kyle Neubeck @KyleNeubeck
Kyle Lowry still absolute money in transition despite having half the legs he used to – 2:33 PM
Ky Carlin @Ky_Carlin
Philly leads 49-47 at the half thanks to a Tyrese Maxey bucket and a Kyle Lowry triple. Jalen Brunson has 23 for New York. #Sixers2:13 PM

The Sixers are introducing Allen Iverson. This should hype the crowd up. – 2:07 PM

Lowry and Embiid return after the timeout. But the Knicks pulled within two points. And you can hear the let’s go knicks chants, again. – 1:55 PM
Mike Vorkunov @MikeVorkunov
Allen Iverson is sitting courtside in Philly right next to Dr. J, who is 3 seats down from Dawn Staley. Might be the best basketball celebrity row any team will have these playoffs. – 1:39 PM
Gina Mizell @ginamizell
Watching Allen Iverson watch the Sixers is fun. He’s never just here to be here/seen. He’s standing up. Reacting to plays. Just pumped up the crowd as the Knicks took that timeout.
(He’s also sitting next to Dr. J, who is sitting a couple seats down from Dawn. Quite the lineup) – 1:37 PM

Brunson fell down trying to grift, and Lowry intentionally tripped over him to successfully grift three FTs. There’s levels to it and Lowry is the all-time king. – 1:17 PM
Keith Pompey @PompeyOnSixers
Lowry with the old-man trick after Brunson fell down. He dove and acted like he was fouled. It worked. The Sixers point guard attempted and made three foul shots. Sixers up 11-7 – 1:17 PM

In a series featuring Joel Embiid and Jalen Brunson, Kyle Lowry just took the grifting title belt. – 1:16 PM
Ky Carlin @Ky_Carlin
That’s the most Kyle Lowry thing I’ve ever seen. He takes advantage of Jalen Brunson falling and draws a foul while shooting a 3. That’s insane. #Sixers1:16 PM

And your first sample of the officiating crew — Lowry with a 3-shot foul as he dives into contact. Your move, commish. – 1:16 PM

You’re not going to believe this…
Al Horford passed none other than ALLEN IVERSON in playoff scoring yesterday.
He’s No. 55 all-time now.
Horford is also No. 22 in blocks, No. 26 in rebounds, No. 50 in assists and No. 65 in steals.
Underrated career. pic.twitter.com/hzguym4MMY12:31 PM

Brooklyn Nets interim coach Kevin Ollie played with Iverson during his time with the Sixers and he gushed over what “The Answer” means to the City of Brotherly Love. “He mans a lot to this city and people sometimes misconstrue what Allen brings because all of the different things that he changed for the game of basketball on and off the basketball court,” said Ollie on Sunday. “He’s authentically himself and people don’t know how talented he is off the court. I mean, funny, can sing, can draw people on the plane. People just don’t know how talented this guy is, but the best talent he has is loyalty. Being a great teammate.” -via Sixers Wire / April 15, 2024
