David Gately named Calvert Hall basketball coach

David Gately, a former standout basketball player at Mount Saint Joseph who previously served nine years as an assistant coach at Calvert Hall, has been named the Cardinals’ new coach.

A 1983 Mount Saint Joseph and 1987 Loyola Maryland graduate, Gately replaces Gary Neal, who stepped down last month after three seasons.

“Calvert Hall has a storied and rich tradition of basketball and I am very excited about this opportunity. I did not attend Calvert Hall, but I do feel a part of the Calvert Hall family,” Gately said. “My son attended Calvert Hall and I was fortunate to coach basketball for nine seasons previously during Coach [John] Bauersfeld’s highly successful tenure.”

Gately becomes the third coach since Bauersfeld stepped down in 2019. During his nine seasons as an assistant, the Cardinals won two Baltimore Catholic League titles. Afterward, he spent two seasons as the coach at McDonogh and more recently was an assistant at Gilman.

The Cardinals finished 16-20 this past season, going 9-7 and finishing in third place in the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference’s Red division and 3-11 in the Baltimore Catholic League. They were eliminated in the first round of each of the league’s playoffs.

“His experience winning games in the extremely competitive MIAA A Conference and the Baltimore Catholic League is a game-changer for us,” Calvert Hall athletic director Dan Mulford said. “He has proven to be a great coach who knows how to develop young men. I look forward to watching our basketball program flourish under Coach Gately’s leadership.”

Gately, who graduated from Loyola as the program’s second all-time leading scorer and entered the school’s athletic hall of fame in 1994, has also been inducted into the Mount Saint Joseph and Baltimore Catholic League halls of fame.
