Kevin Ollie: Cam Thomas should be in the Most Improved Player conversation

0 9
Cam Thomas can still qualify for the NBA’s annual awards. And if he does, Nets interim coach Kevin Ollie said the rising young guard warrants being in the Most Improved Player conversation. “He should be in there, definitely, just with his body of work,” Ollie said before Thomas poured in a team-high 28 points in Friday’s 125-108 win over Chicago. “I know he has a lot of guys he’s competing with as well. But with his body of work, his consistency and him being able to score the ball in the capacity that he’s scoring is always great.”

More on this storyline

After trailing by five at the break, the Nets shot 18-of-24 from three in the second half to power themselves to a 125-108 victory. Their 18 second-half triples tie the NBA record for threes in a half. The mark had been reached four times before Friday, most recently by the Milwaukee Bucks during a win over the Phoenix Suns on March 17th. “We were due for one of these games. We were due for one of them,” interim head coach Kevin Ollie said. “We got some good shooters out there. We haven’t been shooting up to our capabilities. But they just stick with it. They just stayed with it. We had a great shootaround this morning, so I just love how they’re showing connectivity no matter what’s going on. They’re staying in the present moment, which is great to see.” -via Clutch Points / March 30, 2024
Erik Slater: Asked Kevin Ollie what gives the Nets confidence that Noah Clowney can play both PF and C moving forward: “Just his defense… I mean, one play the other night he got over a pick-and-roll for Jordan Poole, met him at the rim, and blocked his shot. That’s elite, that’s guard stuff. We’ve been trying to get our guards to do that. For him to do that at a young age… He’s just a quick processor… You don’t have to tell him to do things over and over again. He processes real quick, and he puts it into practice in real-time. Offensively, he can be a hub for us, I think he’s a great passer and great decision-maker. And he’s crashing the boards, he’s getting to the rim. He’s an elite athlete, and we need more of those on our team. So, he gives us the ability to play above the rim, which we don’t have a lot of.” -via Twitter @erikslater_ / March 29, 2024
Michael Scotto: Dennis Schroder on Cam Thomas: “That’s a max player right there.” Thomas, a Most Improved Player of the Year candidate and the leading scorer for the Brooklyn Nets, will be eligible for a rookie-scale contract extension this offseason. pic.twitter.com/0aLfQ4OtmS -via Twitter @MikeAScotto / March 28, 2024
Erik Slater: Kevin Ollie on Cam Thomas: “I love him at the point. He gets everybody involved. He’s doing a great job to give us another added dimension… He’s controlling matchups… And his teammates know it. His teammates are saying, ‘CT bring it up and control the game for us.’” -via Twitter @erikslater_ / March 27, 2024
Evan Barnes: Nets win 122-119 in OT over the Wizards. Cam Thomas and Jordan Poole match 38-point specials. But the Nets defense pulls it off with that Dorian Finney-Smith steal to seal things after missing a pair of FTs. First Nets win streak in a month. First OT win this season -via Twitter @evan_b / March 27, 2024
