Tempo/Pace of Play

0 20
I wanted to get some dialogue going re: Dayton's tempo or pace of play.

Lots of comments, both on here and in the Twitter-verse, about Dayton playing too slow.
Things like:

When we "minimize" possessions, we allow inferior teams to "stay in the game" or "have a chance".

We need to push the ball. Our offense is so efficient, we need MORE possessions.

Our offense and defense numbers are manipulated or misleading because we play so slow.

I'd really like to understand different perspectives on why it's a good or bad thing.

Personally, I prefer to see or watch a more up-tempo game. But my biggest preference is winning.

As it relates to Dayton, I certainly feel there are times where we can or should push the ball up the floor. Like looking for it after a live ball turnover. Or if Daron somehow is streaking on a run-out (which isn't too often since we need him to anchor a typically deficient rebounding squad). I'd like to consider it more when we're struggling to make baskets in the half court - either the three ball is not going down or we can't get Holmes looks around the rim.

And increasing tempo doesn't just mean we're pushing the ball. Last night against Duquesne we sped up the game by playing full court pressure. Not sure it sped up Dayton that much, but it certainly sped up the Dukes (seemingly to our advantage).

My eyes are not lying to me. We are far from a clinic in the open court. Even last night, in what resulted as an AND-ONE for Santos, was very close to being a charge. And I'm not here to belabor the call. But the angle that Santos took, in what should be an easy layup or dunk in 2-on-1 breakaway was lousy angle. In general, It feels we are very poor tacticians with equally poor execution in fast break opportunities.

Passing, decision making, spacing, angles, etc. In advantageous situations, we never seem to execute these very well. When these should result in a dunk, layup or wide-open three (preferably for Brea). Perhaps we'd be much more inclined to push, and push successfully if we still had Mali? Perhaps this pace of play is way more intentional because it has to be this year?

More often than not, the context of our pace of play is made in vain, as though it's such a terrible thing.

Is it? Thoughts and comments please.
