The two-year wait is over. Sierra Canyon will be joining the Mission League this fall.

The Trailblazers will participate in the area’s top league starting this 2022-23 high school sports season, which is highlighted by their inclusion in football, boys and girls’ basketball, and baseball.

It will create great games in football and baseball, like Sierra Canyon versus Bishop Amat, Gardena Serra and Alemany each year in football. In baseball, we’ll see Sierra Canyon try its best with Harvard-Westlake and Notre Dame/Sherman Oaks. However, recent news has created a big buzz for boys basketball in the Misson League …

Notre Dame added two transfers from Oak Hill Academy (Va.) in senior-to-be Caleb Foster (a Duke commit) and junior-to-be Mercy Miller (Houston) last week, according to head coach Matt Sargeant. The two 5-star recruits will join Gonzaga commit — and reigning Daily News Player of the Year — Dusty Stromer, along with returning starters Dante Ogbu and rising 6-foot-8 sophomore Jayden Harper.

Foster is a 6-foot-5 point guard touted as the No. 2 nationally ranked player in his position by 247Sports.com. Miller is a 6-foot-4 combo guard, more known for his shooting and scoring. He’s the third-best guard prospect in the 2023 class nationally.

It will create ultra-competitive games this upcoming winter. The Mission League schedule is not set in stone, but a tentative slate is set for the all the fun to begin January 6, 2023. The Mission League will also host an end-of-year tournament similar to how college conferences finish their season before March Madness.

The talent in the league will be the best in California, and arguably the country. Harvard-Westlake returns Brady Dunlap, Trent Perry and Jacob Huggins. Sierra Canyon returns Bronny James, Isaiah Elohim and savvy point guard Dylan Metoyer. However, do not be surprised if Sierra Canyon bolsters its roster over the summer.

GOREE AND NALLS OUT AT VIEWPOINT

Viewpoint boys basketball coach JJ Prince informed the Daily News that standout guards Giovanni Goree and Osiris Nalls will not return to the school for their senior seasons this upcoming 2022-23 campaign. Goree was the Daily News’ offensive player of the year, the Gold Coast League MVP, and named the Cal-Hi Sports Division 3 State Player of the Year with the Patriots.

Goree is rumored to be checking in at Taft High to play alongside AJ Johnson and Keyon Kensie with coach Derrick Taylor.

MOORE TAKES OVER AT SANTA CLARA

Former Moorpark High boys basketball coach Ryan Moore, who was set to be the new head coach at Castaic High, will instead be the new coach at Santa Clara High, a catholic school in Ventura County.

Moore was offered a full-time position at Santa Clara as an instructor, according to the school’s press release of his hiring.
