Henry Coleman Hits The Portal

NCAA Basketball: ACC Conference Tournament-Duke Boston College
Mar 9, 2021; Greensboro, North Carolina, USA; Duke Blue Devils forward Henry Coleman III (34) shoots against the Boston College Eagles in the first round of the 2021 ACC men’s basketball tournament at Greensboro Coliseum | Nell Redmond-USA TODAY Sports

A much respected young Devil departs

We can probably all agree on this: everyone loves Henry Coleman. The young forward is smart, hardworking and immensely likable and we’d all like for him to stay at Duke.

But that’s our point of view.

He feels like he’d rather try his luck somewhere else where, presumably, he’ll get more playing time.

That’s his call of course, and we certainly wish him well and will follow him wherever he goes. He’s a promising young man and we have immense respect for him and his family. They’re just great people.

It may be that this is how things will work now. A guy like Coleman signs with a program like Duke and realizes that it’ll take a couple of years for him to get starter minutes and he could go to, say, Richmond and start right away.

And maybe a guy like Seth Curry goes to Liberty and proves himself and then spends the rest of his time at Duke.

The portal may ultimately be about getting guys to programs where they can play at their level and maybe that turns out to be a good thing.

We’re still going to miss Henry though. He was destined to be a fan favorite and he still will be.

Just not in Cameron now.
