Kouame naturalization gets boost in Senate

0 12

SEN. Christopher Lawrence “Bong” Go on Wednesday threw his support behind a proposed measure granting Philippine citizenship to Angelo Kouame.

In his manifestation of support, Go, chairman of the Senate games and sports committee, said that granting Kouame Philippine citizenship will definitely bolster the country’s chances in several upcoming basketball tournaments, including the 2021 FIBA Asia Cup Qualifiers.

“But beyond that, we would have a new brother that we can proudly call Filipino,” Go added.

The senator also manifested his intent to be a co-sponsor of the measure which he believes will help Philippine Basketball.

Go recalled that in 2016, a young man named Angelo Kouame came to the Philippines with one thing in mind — to play basketball.

“Determined to succeed, Kouame endured the language barrier and learned all about the basics of full 5-on-5 basketball here, all while learning our customs, traditions and ideologies.

In 2018, Kouame suited up as a rookie for the reigning champions, the Ateneo Blue Eagles, in the UAAP Season 81. His impact was immediate. He won the Rookie of the Year award, finished second in player statistical points, had the most number of blocks in a game that season, and most importantly helped Ateneo to a 12-2 record and win the championship.

He also joined the Ateneo Blue Eagles in representing the Philippines in the 2018 William Jones Cup held in New Taipei City, Taiwan. Leading the team in rebounds in multiple games, he helped Ateneo to a 5-3 finish.

He continued his improvement the following year in UAAP Season 82. He again finished second in player statistical points, again had the most number of blocks in a game that season, and helped Ateneo win literally all of their games, including the regular season and the Finals,” Go stressed.

Without a doubt, Go also mentioned that Kouame has proven himself with his dedication to his craft.

“He [Kouame] continues to dedicate his basketball skills to the Philippines. He loves the rabid Filipino basketball fanbase. He loves this country. He even has our flag on his Instagram account,” Go said.

“With Senators Sonny Angara, Joel Villanueva, Manny Pacquiao, and yours truly, mayroon na tayong first five (we have already a first five), with Kouame at the center spot. Kulang na lang natin ay tournament, wala tayong masalihan dahil bawal pang mag-basketball (We only lack a tournament, because it is still prohibited to play basketball).

And Senator Gordon, and Sir Frank Drilon, baka pwede kayo maging team manager naming lima (maybe you can be our team managers),” Go added.
