A Cool Kenny Blakeney Interview

Good stuff from the Duke Chronicle

Kenny Blakeney was at Duke from 1991-1995 and so he had a front seat to the greatest moments and some of the bleakest.

He is now the head coach at Howard University, one of the nation’s most prominent HBCU’s, and got some major attention this past recruiting cycle when big man Makur Maker chose Howard over several Power Five offers (unfortunately, Maker is currently shut down with a groin injury).

Blakeney talks about a lot of stuff here, including social activism at Duke and beyond, his relationships with his former teammates and other members, witnessing Christian Laettner’s great shot against Kentucky, and much more.

Here’s an excerpt from his comments on The Shot:

“It was shock—it was complete shock at that moment...it was like a heavyweight fight where two guys are just standing in the middle of the ring and they’re just throwing haymakers at one another. And for it to culminate with a shot—a pass that goes 70 feet, from one baseline to the other free-throw line, and for a guy to fake one way, put it on the deck, turn and shoot and score as time is expiring for a chance to go to the Final Four. I mean, what’s a better feeling than that? So it was complete joy and just complete bliss at that point in time.”
