ACC Roundup - NC State’s Impressive So Far

NCAA Basketball: ACC Tournament-North Carolina State vs Pittsburgh

Check out those turnover numbers

In Wednesday night’s ACC action, Virginia Tech, nipped VMI, NC State ripped UMass-Lowell 90-59, Syracuse ruined Niagara’s visit 75-45 and Florida took out BC 90-70.

Maybe a letdown was inevitable for the Hokies. Whatever happened, the Keydets pushed Virginia Tech. Mike Young was honest afterwards, saying that “I was scared as hell. Doggone, it was like we were shooting at a dime up there instead of a rim.”

Well give him credit for being colorful too.

Our favorite ACC rebounder, Tyrece Radford, had six here including four offensive. Teammate Keve Aluma had a double-double with 17 and 12. Mike Young must be thrilled to have a functional big man.

Cam Hayes is looking like one of the better ACC freshmen: so far he has 16 assists and two turnovers as NC State’s point guard. That’s pretty solid.

State’s playing good defense too. The Pack forced 19 turnovers here after getting 19 against North Florida and 32 - not a typo - against Charleston Southern.

That’s 70 in three games for a 23.3 average per game.

State’s also winning by an average of 33.3 ppg. Obviously it’s not ACC-level competition but Virginia is winning by 20 ppg and UNC by 15.3. We’re just saying keep an eye on the Pack.

If you’re looking for a possible flaw, try free throw shooting: State hit just 10-18 here. That could hurt in a tight game.

Syracuse had one positive test in a walk-on that saw five players sit out, including Buddy Boeheim.

Quincy Guerrier had a hot game, shooting 9-10 and pulling down 13 boards. Syracuse had a huge advantage on the boards at 51-21.

Freshman Kadari Richmond had 16 points and seven boards in his first start.

Greg Paulus says he found out about the positive test right before the game.

Florida never had much trouble with BC which is too bad since the Eagles looked pretty good against Villanova, Rhode Island and St. John’s. True, they’re just 1-3, but they’ve been competitive. Boston College just wasn’t very good in this one.

Special congratulations to the NC State women's team for knocking off South Carolina. Dawn Staley’s team had won 29 straight games, so this is a huge win for the Pack.

On Friday, Virginia gets Kent State, Duke hosts Bellarmine and Stetson visits Miami.

Three games are off: Tennessee-Notre Dame, UNC-G vs. Louisville and Rhode Island vs. BC.

Thursday’s Results:

  • Virginia Tech 64 VMI 57
