UCLA basketball home opener against Long Beach State postponed

Monday night’s men’s basketball game between UCLA and visiting Long Beach State was postponed due to COVID-19 protocol issues within the Long Beach program.

Statements issued by both schools said the game was postponed due to “an abundance of caution.” The teams plan to reschedule the game, though there was no immediate word on when that might happen.

LBSU, which has not played a game yet this season, has been cleared to continue basketball activities, and no pause will be taken at this time, the school said in its statement.

According to reports, a game-day test led to the postponement. It isn’t immediately known whether that involved a player.

UCLA coach Mick Cronin told reporters that his players went through their entire pregame routine before learning their home opener was off.

UCLA’s next scheduled game is on Thursday against Seattle University before the team opens an expanded 20-game Pac-12 Conference schedule against Cal on Sunday.

The Bruins (1-1) lost their season opener to San Diego State last Wednesday and needed three overtimes to beat Pepperdine two days later.

Long Beach is next scheduled to play another nonconference game at Loyola Marymount on Friday.

The UCLA women’s team also had its home opener against Cal State Fullerton postponed for 48 hours last week, when the Bruins had to delay it until Friday because there was a delay in getting test results for the Fullerton team. Sunday’s UCLA-Pepperdine women’s game was also postponed for COVID-19-related reasons.
