Lakers one of four teams still pursuing Glenn Robinson III in free agency

It sounds like the Lakers are one of the final teams still alive in the free agency saga of Glenn Robinson III.

The Los Angeles Lakers have three guaranteed contract spots available on their roster with training camp set to begin on Tuesday, and so perhaps it’s not a coincidence that a team that could use at least one more wing defensively is once again being linked to one of the best remaining wings on the market, Glenn Robinson III.

That’s right, for the second time in less than a week, the Lakers have been connected to Robinson. After it was initially reported that they were one of five teams — including the LA Clippers, Houston Rockets, Brooklyn Nets and Utah Jazz — to have interest in Robinson, now Jason Anderson of the Sacramento Bee is adding the Kings to that mix, and removing a few other teams:

The Kings are one of four teams showing the most significant interest in free agent small forward Glenn Robinson III, league sources told The Sacramento Bee. McNair and assistant general manager Wes Wilcox have been forthright and diligent throughout the process in talks between the two sides, sources said.

The most likely suitors at this point appear to be the Kings, Los Angeles Lakers, Los Angeles Clippers and Utah Jazz, sources said. The Kings could be looking for depth on the wing after they declined to match Bogdan Bogdanovic’s offer from the Atlanta Hawks.

Everything about this — from the anonymous praise for the Kings executives, to the listing of the “most likely” suitors and this being phrased as something the Kings “could be” looking for — make this one of the most clear leaks from an agent in NBA history, so just keep that in mind when evaluating how legitimate the Lakers’ interest in Robinson may or may not be.

Still, this almost assuredly being a plant from Robinson’s agent in an effort to drum up everyone’s best offers doesn’t mean that it’s not true, because as mentioned here previously, Robinson would fill a need for this Lakers team. And since this is the second time Robinson has been linked to the Lakers in a matter of days by two separate reporters, this has to be coming from somewhere.

Interestingly enough, though, Rob Pelinka and Co. are instead (so far) choosing to keep their roster spots open, likely waiting to see if any other, more attractive options get bought out or cut (hello Trevor Ariza and Nic Batum). That makes some sense philosophically, but could eventually leave them without Robinson as a solid fallback option if he gets antsy and takes the bag from the Kings (or just joins the Clippers, Jazz or some other team). Given that the Lakers haven’t signed him yet, it would appear that’s a scenario they’re fine risking, but it is still a risk (albeit a small one).

Because as much as this team could use one more point guard and center, respectively, with two of their remaining roster spots, using the third one on someone to handle some wing minutes on nights when LeBron James sits out — or as insurance for any wing injuries — wouldn’t be the worst idea in the world, and Robinson fits the bill. We’ll see if the Lakers agree fairly soon, because with teams having to start coronavirus testing today to get to join training camp on day one, one would think they’d want to get their roster straightened out so new additions can start getting tested and get into camp as soon as possible.
