Duke fans, you will enjoy this

It’s a lesson we learn over and over again: you really can’t know much about anyone from a distance.

Take Pat Head Summit. We only saw her on TV and usually in full Coach Mode, intense and vigilant, usually scowling.

Judging someone based on that - like a lot of people judge Duke’s Coach K, for instance, entirely missing his sense of humor and his compassion for those who suffer - is really unfair.

Take this very interesting passage about Summitt from this Washington Post story about new Duke women’s basketball coach Kara Lawson.

Summitt told Lawson she had many gifts but that being a poor communicator would hold her back.

So she made her communicate, frequently and in uncomfortable ways. She turned a weakness into a great strength.

It’s a really interesting part of this profile about Lawson and how her life led her to this point. We’ll have some idea soon of what she’ll do with her new program. In the meantime stuff like this is really great to read.
