Makur Maker says colleges have backed off as he awaits word on 2020 NBA Draft

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. — Makur Maker isn’t yet sure whether he’s 2020 NBA draft-eligible. Even with that in question, he said most college teams aren’t pursuing him.
Maker talked about his future prospects on Sunday at the Hoophall Classic after a game with Hillcrest Prep (CA).
“All the college kinda backed off of me ever since they heard I was going to the NBA,” Maker said after putting up 8 points and 7 rebounds in a 91-48 blowout loss to Sunrise Christian (KS). “If they’re recruiting me hard, I’m willing to go look.”
The seven-foot center requested eligibility for the 2020 NBA draft, like his cousin and current Detroit Piston, Thon Maker.
“If I‘m a top pick in the NBA draft, why not go?” Maker said. “Right now, my whole thing is to get better.”
It doesn’t really frustrate him that schools have gone cold.
“If they really value me and see potential, of course they’re going to recruit me,” Maker said. “Since they backed off me, I don’t really pay no mind to it.”
He visited Howard University in October, and it doesn’t sound like he has any more visits lined up. He said he had heard from Cal and Oregon.
“I’m not even focused on the NBA process right now,” Maker said. “I’m focused on getting better. The season’s about winning games and becoming a better team.”
