Academy's Riley Mulvey growing his game
Riley Mulvey is a 6-foot-11 sophomore starting center for the Albany Academy boys' basketball team.
As a freshman reserve during the 2018-19 season, Mulvey helped the Cadets capture a Class A Federation Tournament of Champions title at Cool Insuring Arena.
The sophomore, who has already made unofficial Division I visits to Iowa, Rutgers and the University of Massachusetts, tallied 10 points, grabbed eight rebounds and blocked four shots Saturday at SEFCU Arena when Albany Academy defeated Schalmont 75-46.
Q: What kind of expectation level do you have for yourself this season?
A: This year, I want to try to get at least 10 points per game, trying to get 10 rebounds and, if I can, ideally I would like to get 10 blocks per game. I am trying to provide help defense and get a lot more offensive boards.
Q: You had four blocks against Schalmont and I felt those were deterrents to keep the Sabres away from the basket. Do you feel you deterred them from driving to the basket?
A: I felt like their main plan was to shoot 3s. When they went inside, either me, 'Dre (Andre Jackson) or Marcus (Jackson) stopped them.
Q: I know you have a jump shot, so what were some of the other elements you looked to add to your game this season?
A: Over the summer, I worked on a lot of post hooks, drop-step moves, the midrange jumper I have now and pick-and-roll stuff. That is what I did mainly. I worked out a lot at Dags Basketball, where I did all of that.
Q: You got to play important minutes during the 2018-19 seasons. How valuable was that experience playing against some elite competition?
