Macura played at Xavier and was with the Hornets last season on a two-way contract.

According to The Athletic’s Joe Vardon and Shams Charania, the Cavs have signed guard J.P. Macura to an Exhibit 10, partially guaranteed deal for the 2019-20 season:

Macura, 24, is from Minnesota and played college basketball at Xavier in Cincinnati. He went undrafted in the 2018 NBA Draft and spent last season with the Hornets on a two-way deal. He played two games in the NBA — a total of 17 minutes — and 30 in the G-League with the Greensboro Swarm, Charlotte’s affiliate. In the G-League, he averaged 16.4 points while shooting 36.4% from the field. He’s listed at 6’5” and 203 pounds.

By signing a Exhibit 10 deal, the Cavs have the option to convert Macura’s deal into a two-way slot. Currently, they have one open two-way slot. Rookie forward Dean Wade is signed to the other.

From afar, this feels like a play to get a young player in the organization so they can try to develop him this season. Macura doesn’t profile as someone ready to contribute right now, so ending up with the Canton Charge seems like a realistic outcome for him. He also continues a trend this summer where the Cavs are going for offensive-oriented prospects based on how he plays and his size.

Here’s a Macura highlight video from last season:
