Reports: Cavs to take Darius Garland with fifth overall pick, unless they don’t

0 7

The draft has not started, but the first five picks seem to be known. Unless they aren’t.

Well, so much for draft fireworks. Or, maybe they’re fireworks, but they aren’t coming in real time. I’m typing this 15 minutes before the draft is scheduled to start, and yet the first five picks appear to be in place.

The Cleveland Cavaliers, according to the New York Times’ Marc Stein, will be selecting Vanderbilt combo guard Darius Garland. Yahoo! Sports’ Chris Haynes is also reporting this pick.

But not so fast. ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski and Brian Windhorst say that Garland is very much in play for the Cavs, but they are still shopping the pick.

Garland is a 6’2”, 175 pound score-first point guard that projects as an excellent shooter off the bounce. He only played five games at Vanderbilt due to injury, and recorded more turnovers than assists. His pedigree is quite good, and he scored at an extremely efficient rate. How he would fit with Collin Sexton will be an open question. It’s unclear what sort of defender Garland projects as.

We’ll keep everything as updated as possible throughout the night.
