NBA Draft: College blogs’ takes on prospects who could be available at 28

0 0

With the 2019 NBA Draft rapidly approaching, we borrow from our friends around SB Nation to discuss some of the top prospects for the Warriors.

The Golden State Warriors will be adding new talent to their team tomorrow with the 28th pick in the 2019 NBA Draft.

We’ve already had a discussion about Virginia’s Ty Jerome after the recently completed 2019 SB Nation NBA Blogger Mock Draft. But today, we’re going to expand that discussion a bit with a look at perspectives of potential draft picks through the lens of SB Nation’s network of college blogs.

Not every college blog has shared information about their various players, but who are a few who have shared their perspectives about some of the shooters in the draft who could be available when the Warriors pick.

Washington’s Matisse Thybulle (UW Dawg Pound)

Basics: G, 6-foot-5, Washington

Basketball-Reference stats: https://www.sports-reference.com/cbb/players/matisse-thybulle-1.html

Dawg Pound’s take: “...Thybulle is the consummate 3 and D player...Matisse doesn’t need shot attempts to be happy. He’s more than willing to have his primary mission be to shut down the opposing team’s best scorer...Thybulle is ready to be a contributor from day one and he fits best on a team that has a winning defensive culture already established. He could play either the SG or SF position depending on what a team already has on the wing. But ideally Thybulle would be the 4th or 5th scoring option and be placed in a position where he’s not asked to create for himself or others.”

Cameron Johnson NBA Draft Profile (Tar Heel Blog)

Basics: G, 6-foot-9, North Carolina

Basketball-Reference profile: https://www.sports-reference.com/cbb/players/cameron-johnson-4.html

Tar Heel Blog’s take: “At 6’8.5’’, Johnson’s a tall enough wing, particularly if you play him at shooting guard, to the point that he doesn’t need a lightning-quick release to get his shot up, even with the speed of NBA defenses. He can simply see the basket and shoot over most guys who try to get a hand up on him. The fact that his release is one of the quickest and cleanest in the country, then, is all the more attractive, turning something that’s a tool against probably 80% of NBA defenders into something that basically can’t be stopped. He knocked down tightly contested shots regularly because of his ability to maximize space combined with his height. Off screens, catch-and-shoot, relocating, and even occasionally pulling up, Johnson’s tight mechanics never suffer from head to toes, and as long as he has space to land, every shot looks like it’s going in.”

Admiral Schofield can do a little bit of everything (Rocky Top Talk)

Basics: G, 6-foot-6, Tennessee

Basketball-Reference profile: https://www.sports-reference.com/cbb/players/admiral-schofield-1.html

Rocky Top Talk’s take: “His ability as a shooter sets him apart and offers instant production at the NBA level. While he’s likely never going to be a dynamic scorer as a pro, Schofield can at least offer a unique blend of shooting, defense and rebounding off the bench from day one.

Schofield’s ability to defend the 2-4 positions should have plenty of teams intrigued at the top of the second round. While he may be maxed out as an athlete, Admiral is ready to help a roster immediately in a number of different ways.”

Carsen Edwards (Hammer & Rails)

Basics: G, 6-foot-1, Purdue

Basketball-Reference profile: https://www.sports-reference.com/cbb/players/carsen-edwards-1.html

Hammer & Rails’ take: “For his career, he shot just over 40% from the field and 36% from three. While those will need to be right at or stay higher for he to be productive in the league, it is definitely feasible to think that he could be the score first guard coming off the bench. Did you see Quinn Cook last night? Klay goes down and he comes in and makes three big shots. Steph said after the game that Quinn may be the most confident player on the roster, no matter the amount of playing time he gets, when he comes in he is ready. I could definitely see Carsen having that same mentality.”

Who do you think the Warriors should draft?

I made a poll on Ranker to create a community draft board with these players (and many others) in advance of tomorrow’s draft, so go check that out and we’ll post the results tomorrow. Here’s the link:

After that, let us know who you’re hoping the Warriors get in the comments!
