Ex-Stanford forward Nneka Ogwumike thrilled to face Nigeria in World Cup
Nneka Ogwumike
Friday will be a special day for the former Stanford forward when the U.S. basketball team faces Nigeria in the quarterfinals of the Women’s World Cup in Spain. Nigeria is the talk of the World Cup after becoming the first African nation to advance to a quarterfinals, and Ogwumike is of Nigerian descent. “It’s a bittersweet situation,” Ogwumike said. “These are the two countries that have been so big a part of my upbringing and now they are here (playing each other). ... It’s amazing. We’ve seen a lot of skillful development in these African countries and I love it.”
