Warriors officially extend Steve Kerr

0

The coach who brought Golden State to glory is sticking around.

We’ve known it was coming for a while, but today it became official. The Golden State Warriors have extended head coach Steve Kerr’s contract.

The team officially announced the extension today, on their website and through social media.

The press release features a touching quote from general manager Bob Myers: “We’re excited to have Steve under contract and poised to lead our team for the next several years. Under his guidance, we’ve been fortunate enough to win three NBA titles in four years and his ability to thrive in all facets of his job is certainly a primary reason for our success. He’s a terrific coach, but more importantly an incredible human being.”

While the team did not release any of the terms of the contract, it had previously been reported that the extension would make Kerr one of the highest-paid coaches in the league. And deservedly so, as Kerr has taken the team to the NBA Finals in all four of his seasons, including a trio of championships.

The news is obviously exciting for those who want the team to keep winning, but it also signals that Kerr may be feeling optimistic about his health. Kerr missed large parts of the 2015-16 and 2016-17 seasons while dealing with severe health complications; it was fair to wonder if his coaching career was in jeopardy. But after being on the sideline for the entirety of last year, Kerr appears to be healing up, which is wonderful news.
