Lakers will work out Moritz Wagner, others on Sunday

0

The Lakers will host Michigan star Moritz Wagner for a pre-draft workout on Sunday along with five other players.

The Los Angeles Lakers announced the next set of players that will be working out for the team on Sunday morning, a group that includes Kevin Hervey of Texas-Arlington, Alize Johnson of Missouri State, Terry Larrier of Connecticut, Thomas Wilder of Western Michigan, Jared Terrell of Rhode Island and Moritz Wagner of Michigan.

The stand out among Sunday’s slate of players is Wagner, who is ranked No. 35 in Jonathan Givony of ESPN’s top 100 prospects for the 2018 NBA draft.

The 6-foot-11 junior out of Michigan did himself a favor by returning for one more season with the Wolverines, where he had his best individual season of his collegiate career. In 39 games for Michigan, Wagner averaged 14.6 points while draining 39.4 percent of his 160 total 3-point attempts. He also averaged a career-high 7.1 rebounds per game, including 5.7 defensive rebounds per game.

With Brook Lopez set to hit unrestricted free agency this summer and Ivica Zubac and Thomas Bryant still a few years away from contributing meaningful minutes, Wagner could be an option with the Lakers’ first-round pick. However, the German big man might be a reach at No. 25 overall with most mock drafts having him projected to go in the mid-30s.

Other notable players that will be at the UCLA Health Training Center in El Segundo on Sunday include Hervey and Johnson. Hervey is more likely to be a candidate for the Lakers with the second-round pick than Johnson, who could end up not having his name called during next month’s draft.

We’ll have the latest updates for you here on Silver Screen and Roll as the Lakers continue their search for the next late-draft gem.
