Luke Ford, 2018’s best available tight end, commits to Georgia’s No. 1 class

His vow to play alongside five-star QB Justin Fields holds true.

Four-star class of 2018 tight end Luke Ford committed to play in college at Georgia, he announced on the second day of the Early Signing Period. The Illinois native is the second-highest rated at the position overall and adds to what was already the highest-rated class in the country.

Ford decommitted from Arkansas in June, and his recruitment’s gone to another level since then. He has offers from dozens of schools. Alabama and Auburn had emerged as favorites at one point, but Ford entertained offers from dozens of schools, right up until the Signing Period.

But maybe there shouldn’t have been so much suspense.

Ford said in July that he’d play at whichever school landed then-uncommitted five-star quarterback Justin Fields. Well, it turned out Georgia was that school. Maybe the writing was on the wall as soon as Fields picked the Bulldogs in October.

Fields was the star of The Opening, an elite recruiting showcase that wrapped up in Oregon on July 3. But Ford was one of its best tight ends.

Ford, like a lot of young tight ends, models his game after Rob Gronkowski’s.

“My game is just getting physical, blocking, running out for passes, catching the ball at the high point, using my speed and strength to get around and get open,” he says.

Ford’s close to a dream prospect at the position. He’s got a 6’6 frame and is built like a bull, and it’s not hard to see him being a dominant run-blocker for a tight end. His hands are excellent, and he uses his size to create space while running routes.
