Martin Truex wins series-best sixth race of the season, advances to semi-final round of Cup Series playoffs.

It wasn’t a typical performance for Martin Truex Jr. but when the checkered flag waved Sunday there he stood in victory lane after winning the Bank of America 500 at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

Truex started 16th and during much of the early going didn’t appear he would be in position to win, but gradually his team improved the No. 78 Toyota and by the end of Stage 2 he was up to fourth. During the third stage he asserted himself, then withstood two late restarts to pull away and win his Monster Energy Cup Series-best sixth race of the season.

“It was tough out there today,” Truex said. “The car was a handful.”

Chase Elliott finished second, followed by Kevin Harvick, Denny Hamlin and Jamie McMurray. Rookie Daniel Suarez, defending Cup champion Jimmie Johnson, Ryan Blaney, Kasey Kahne and Kyle Larson completed the top 10.

Championship contender Kyle Busch endured a trying afternoon, hitting the wall multiple times and laboring to a 29th-place finish. Afterward, he required medical attention after collapsing when got out of his car before eventually walking to an awaiting ambulance where was transported to the infield care center.
