Gerald Green is looking for boats to help Houston flood victims

0

The Houston native wants to get out there and help.

Current NBA free agent Gerald Green is from Houston and lives there during the offseason, so the flooding from Hurricane Harvey hits him even closer to home than most. But Green’s doing more than promoting awareness or donating his money; he’s actively looking for people in Texas with boats so he can go help people who are stranded in their homes.

This afternoon, Green posted this to his Instagram. (He does curse, so if you’re one of those folks who’s bothered by that, just don’t click it. OK?)

Houston didn’t issue a mandatory evacuation, mainly because the highway infrastructure surrounding the city literally couldn’t have supported it. (There’s more nuance to that decision that can’t be portrayed in a single sentence, but that’s the gist of it.) As a result, in areas that have flooded, some people — especially residents who are elderly, have disabilities, or are otherwise not as mobile — are stuck in houses with water slowly rising. That’s why locals with boats have been coordinating help with the Houston County Sheriff’s Office to rescue residents who are stuck.

There may be more rain coming for Houston, too, so this isn’t over yet. If you want to help rescue residents with Gerald Green and have a boat, get in touch with him (or the Sheriff’s Office).
