Report: Mets Have ‘Spit-Balled’ Trading Nimmo

0 2

The Mets have floated the idea of moving Brandon Nimmo this offseason, according to the New York Post‘s Joel Sherman. The goal for the Mets is to improve defensively, focus on youth and focus on run prevention. Sherman reports “an AL official noted the Mets have “spit-balled” ideas about Nimmo and how much they might have to eat contractually to move him.”

Nimmo has five years remaining on his contract, which he signed ahead of the 2023 season. $101.25 million is owed to him, and the Mets outfielder has a full no-trade clause, so it would be a tall task for the team to trade him.

Nimmo hit a career-high 25 home runs and 92 RBIs in 2025. His OPS ticked up over 30 points to .760, but that still ranks second-lowest in a full season for Nimmo.

It was a mixed bag for him defensively. Nimmo played 150 games in left field, his most ever. He accumulated four defensive runs saved above average. However, he netted a zero OAA. His fielding run value was in the 47th percentile. David Stearns doubled down on these overall average stats:

“Brandon had a year where he made a lot of really good plays defensively and then there were probably some plays that he knows he can make that he wants to make that we didn’t quite secure,” the team’s president of baseball operations said, “He would tell you that he’s a better defender overall than what he showed last year and I think he’s going to prove that.”

Nimmo will turn 33 years old next year and is currently the longest-tenured player in the organization. Chances are low that the team will actually trade Nimmo, but the idea that they are even floating his name around proves the team is doubling down on their post-mortem comments on how to take the team to the next level.
