Juan Soto, Edwin Díaz Win Big at MLB Awards

The 2025 First and Second All-MLB Teams were announced Thursday night at the MLB Awards show in Las Vegas. Juan Soto made the All-MLB First Team, while closer Edwin Díaz won the Trevor Hoffman Reliever of the Year Award and made the All-MLB Second Team. Pete Alonso and Francisco Lindor were up for both teams, too, but didn’t make the cut.

Soto’s first year in Queens was considered a “down year” by many, but it was far from it. While his batting average was un-Soto-like (.263), he still put up an impressive .263/.396/.525 (.921) line with 43 home runs, 105 RBIs, 20 doubles and 38 stolen bases. The 27-year-old signed the richest contract in professional sports history last offseason, and hit a career-high in home runs, tied the league in stolen bases and led the NL in OBP. He reached 30-30 for the first time in his career, won his sixth Silver Slugger Award and was an NL MVP finalist. Soto now adds a fourth All-MLB First Team to his elusive resume.

Díaz, meanwhile, returned to elite form in 2025. Named to his third All-Star team, the 31-year-old struck out 98 batters in 66.1 innings of work, posting a 1.63 ERA while saving 28 games. He posted the second-best ERA among qualified relievers in 2025, accumulated a 13.30 K/9 rate and landed in the 91st percentile in pitching run value (17). Batters mustered a .133 average and .181 xBA against his four-seamer, while finding slightly better success against his slider: a .179 average and .156 xBA. The 31-year-old ranked in the 99th percentile in both whiff percentage (41.5%) and strikeout percentage (38%).

It’s Díaz’s second-career NL Reliever of the Year, and third overall, winning AL Reliever of the Year with the Mariners in 2018.

Simply put, Díaz was nasty in 2025 and was one of the most dominant back arms in baseball.
