0 10

MLB announced Monday that former major league player and coach Sandy Alomar Sr. passed away. He was 81. A member of the New York Mets in 1967, Alomar Sr. rejoined the team as a coach in 2005 until 2009.

The Puerto Rican second baseman played for six different teams across his 15-year career (Braves, Mets, White Sox, Angels, Yankees & Rangers), and was an All-Star with the California Angels in 1970. A switch-hitter who threw right-handed, Alomar Sr. stole 227 bases, including a career-high 39 in 1971.

The second baseman appeared in just 15 games for the Mets in 1967 before being traded to the White Sox. He finished his career with a .245/.290/.288 (.578 OPS) line, notching 1,168 hits, 126 doubles, 19 triples and 13 home runs.

Alomar joined the Mets in 2005 as a bench coach, moving to first base coach in 2006. In 2007, he became the third base coach, returning to bench coach in 2008 and 2009. Before joining the Mets’ coaching staff, Alomar was a manager in the Padres, Cubs and Rockies systems. He managed several winter league teams in his native Puerto Rico and even managed the Puerto Rican national team.

He is notably the father of 1990 Rookie of the Year and six-time All-Star Sandy Alomar Jr. and Hall of Famer and 12x All-Star Roberto Alomar. Both of his sons spent time as players in Queens (Alomar Jr. was with the Mets in 2007, and Roberto was with the team between 2002-03). Alomar Jr. was on the Mets’ coaching staff with his father from 2008 to 2009, acting as a catching instructor in the organization.
