Report: Mets Interested in Danny Coulombe

0 3

According to the New York Post’s Jon Heyman, the Mets are reportedly interested in Minnesota Twins left-handed reliever Danny Coulombe as they look to bolster their bullpen ahead of the 2025 trade deadline.

With both A.J. Minter and Danny Young out for the season, New York has spent the past two months patching together lefty relief innings using journeymen and minor league depth. Although they welcomed veteran Brooks Raley back from injury on Friday, he’s currently the only southpaw in the big league bullpen, a less-than-ideal situation for a team with World Series aspirations.

At 35-years-old and in the midst of a breakout season, Coulombe would offer stability in that role. He’s been remarkably effective this year, allowing just two earned runs over 26 2/3 innings while striking out over a quarter of the batters he’s faced. His approach relies on movement and pitch variety rather than velocity, and and he’s handled hitters from both sides. Lefties are hitting just .208/.240/.229 against him, and righties have managed an even lower .163/.241/.204 line.

In addition to offering help from the left side, Coulombe could also slide into a setup role. With Reed Garrett and Huascar Brazobán dealing with wear and tear while Ryne Stanek battles inconsistency, the Mets could use another reliable arm to bridge the gap to closer Edwin Díaz.

Coulombe, who is earning just $3 million on a one-year deal, is a practical fit from a payroll standpoint. The biggest complication lies in Minnesota’s uncertain deadline direction. At just under .500 with a 47-49 record, the Twins could choose to buy, sell or both, making any deal for Coulombe dependent on how Minnesota views its postseason chances in the coming weeks.

Since Coulombe is on a one-year contract, acquiring him likely wouldn’t demand a significant prospect haul.
